How do Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode work for a clinic-related search?

Medslots team, Letex Media Co.How we write and check facts

Updated 10 min readFacts checked

Short answer

An AI Overview is Google's short AI-written summary at the top of some searches; AI Mode is a separate, more conversational AI search you open yourself. Google shows them mainly on questions that need explaining, not plain 'near me' searches, and pulls facts from pages, profiles and reviews that already rank well.

Key takeaways

  • AI Overviews are short AI summaries inside ordinary Search results; AI Mode is a separate, more conversational AI search Google added to India from 24 Jun 2025.
  • Google says both are built from its normal Search index and ranking systems, not a private list of clinics or a place you can buy.
  • A plain 'clinic near me' search usually still gets Google's map-based local result; a question that needs explaining is more likely to get an AI Overview.
  • In January 2026 Google removed AI Overviews for specific liver-test searches after they left out details that change what a normal result means, proof Google does step in on health answers.
  • Since 31 Aug 2026, Search Console has its own Generative AI performance report, so a clinic can see its own impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode instead of guessing.

Patients increasingly see an AI-written answer sitting above Google's usual list of links, or open a fuller AI chat inside Search itself. This post stays narrow, on purpose: only Google's own two AI features, what each one is, when Google says they appear, what a clinic can and can't influence, and how to check your own clinic today.

What is an AI Overview, and what is AI Mode?

An AI Overview is a short, AI-written summary Google can show above the usual results, right inside an ordinary search. AI Mode is a separate way to search that a reader opens on purpose, built for questions that need more exploring than one search box usually allows.

Google's own Search Help pages describe the two plainly. An AI Overview appears, in Google's words, "when our systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful, for example, when you want to quickly understand information from a range of sources." AI Mode goes a step further: it breaks a question into smaller sub-questions, a method Google calls query fan-out, searches each one, and falls back to a plain set of links only when it isn't confident enough to answer directly.

When do they show up for a clinic-related search?

More often on a question that needs explaining than on a plain "near me" search. A search like "[specialty] clinic near me" usually still gets Google's ordinary map-based local result, the kind with a pin, a phone number and a directions link. A question like "is it normal to have pain a week after a root canal" or "when should a knee injury be seen by a doctor" is closer to what Google describes as helped by an AI Overview: no single right answer, and several sources worth pulling together.

Google does not publish its own per-query-type AI Overview rates, so treat this as a snapshot, not a guarantee for any single search.

Health questions also sit inside what Google calls YMYL, "your money or your life", topics: ones that can affect someone's health, finances or safety. Google's own guidance on helpful content says its ranking systems give real weight to strong expertise, authority and trustworthiness on subjects like this. An AI Overview is built from pages that have already cleared that bar inside ordinary Search, not a separate, easier one written just for AI answers.

The stakes are the scale involved. Google's Chief Health Officer, Dr Michael Howell, said in March 2026 that people ask the company more than a billion health questions every day. Google also steps in when an AI Overview gets a health question wrong, rather than leaving it as it is. In January 2026, The Guardian reported that AI Overviews for liver blood test ranges left out details, such as age, sex and ethnicity, that change what counts as a normal value. By 11 January 2026, Google had removed the AI Overview from those specific searches. A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch the company doesn't comment on individual removals but works on broad improvements, and that its own clinicians had reviewed the queries and found the information was, in many cases, not inaccurate, just incomplete without that missing context.

How has this looked in India so far?

A short, dated record. Two entries here, the health-query removal and the newest Search Console report, are recent enough that many older guides to "AI visibility" for Indian clinics don't mention them yet.

How does Google decide which pages and businesses to mention?

Both features draw on Google's ordinary Search index and ranking systems. Neither holds a private list of clinics or a separate database to look you up in. AI Mode's own help page says its responses are "supported by high quality web content to improve factuality," pulled from whatever already ranks well for the sub-questions it generates.

Google's developer documentation is blunt about markup: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add." Meeting Google's normal technical requirements, being indexable and eligible for a snippet, is the actual bar, and clearing it still doesn't guarantee a page gets used. We go further into schema and llms.txt specifically in does schema markup help a clinic show up in ChatGPT?.

What can a clinic actually influence, and what is out of its hands?

Nothing here is a trick. It's the same handful of things that help an ordinary Search result, because both AI features are built on top of ordinary Search.

  • No paid placement. Google's documentation for AI features describes eligibility in terms of ordinary Search requirements. It says nothing about a way to buy a spot inside the answer text, and we know of none.
  • No guaranteed ranking. The same local-ranking page Google publishes for ordinary Search says there is no way to request or pay for a better position. Nothing about AI Overviews or AI Mode changes that.

How do you check what Google's AI features say about your clinic?

A five-minute look from your own phone tells you more than a promise from anyone selling "AI visibility".

Check Google's own AI features for your clinic

  • Search your clinic's name, and a common service plus your area, from your phone.

Try a private or signed-out window too. Location and your account both change what you see.

  • Look for an AI Overview above the results, and note whether your clinic is named and the details are right.

  • Tap the Web filter after the search.

It shows the same query as a plain list of links, without the AI Overview, so you can compare.

  • Open AI Mode and ask the same questions.

Once in English, and once in Hindi if that's how your patients search.

  • If your site is verified in Search Console, open the Generative AI performance report.

It shows which of your pages actually get impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, rolled out to every site from 31 Aug 2026.

  • Fix any mismatch at the source, usually your Google Business Profile, rather than trying to edit the AI answer itself.

The Generative AI performance report shows less than its name suggests, worth knowing before you go looking for something it doesn't have.

What the Generative AI performance report actually shows
QuestionAnswer
Does it show impressions?Yes, how many times a link to your site was shown inside AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Does it show clicks or position? No. Impressions only, broken down by page, country, device and date.
Does it separate AI Overviews from AI Mode? No. Google combines both features into one impression count.
Does it show which search triggered the impression? No. There's a breakdown by page, not by the query someone typed.
Is the newest data final? No. The latest days show as preliminary and can still change.

Common questions

Is an AI Overview the same thing as a Google featured snippet?

No. A featured snippet pulls one passage from one page. An AI Overview is a summary Google's own systems write from several pages at once, with links to some of them. The two can look similar at a glance, but they are built differently and neither is something you can request.

Can I pay Google to make my clinic appear in an AI Overview or AI Mode answer?

We know of no way to do that. Google's documentation for AI features describes eligibility in terms of normal Search requirements, being indexable and eligible for a snippet, not a paid placement, and doesn't mention one. Be wary of anyone who promises a guaranteed spot for a fee.

Does Google's AI Mode work in Hindi for patients searching in India?

Yes. Google launched AI Mode in India in English on 24 June 2025, added Hindi that September, and added Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu that October. If your patients search in one of these, it's worth checking what AI Mode says in that language too.

Why did Google remove AI Overviews for some health searches in January 2026?

The Guardian found that AI Overviews for liver blood test ranges left out details like age, sex and ethnicity that change what counts as normal, which could lead someone to misread a result. Google removed the AI Overview from those specific searches by 11 January 2026. A Google spokesperson said the company doesn't comment on individual removals but works on broad improvements.

How do I see what Google's AI features currently show about my own clinic?

Search your clinic's name and a common service from your own phone, look above the results for an AI Overview, and open AI Mode for the same question. If your website is verified in Search Console, its new Generative AI performance report, rolled out worldwide from 31 August 2026, shows which of your pages actually get impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode.

If an AI Overview repeats wording from my clinic's website, does that add a compliance risk?

Not a new one. Regulation 6.1.1 of the NMC's 2002 code already bars self-praising publicity about your skill or achievements, in any mode, so the rule is about what you publish, not where it later gets quoted. Wording that is already plain and factual carries no extra risk from being summarised. Wording that oversells does, whether or not an AI Overview ever repeats it.
