Does your clinic need a WhatsApp verified badge?
Updated 8 min readFacts checked
WhatsApp offers two separate badges: a free Official Business Account checkmark, open only to businesses on the paid WhatsApp Business Platform that meet Meta's own criteria, and a paid Meta Verified subscription, priced from ₹639 a month in India, for the ordinary WhatsApp Business app most clinics use. Paying does not guarantee approval.

Search "WhatsApp verified badge" and most pages describe one badge and one way to get it. There are actually two badges, on two different WhatsApp products, and only one of them is free. Here is what Meta's own pages say, not what a vendor blog repeats about it.
What does the WhatsApp verified badge actually check?
A checkmark next to a business name on WhatsApp confirms one thing: Meta has reviewed the account and believes it genuinely belongs to the business it claims to be. Per WhatsApp's own Help Center (opens in a new tab), Meta verifies this "based on their activity across Meta technologies, or information or documents they provide." The badge appears in the calls tab, the business profile, the chat itself, incoming calls and shared context cards.
That is the whole job of the badge: proving the account is not an impersonator. It does not check a doctor's registration, a clinic's licence, or anything about the treatments offered, and it is not a quality rating.
What is a free Official Business Account, and can a clinic get one?
An Official Business Account (OBA) is the free badge. It shows as a blue checkmark, and per Meta's own developer documentation (opens in a new tab), it applies only to a phone number on the WhatsApp Business Platform, the paid API that businesses connect through a provider, not the ordinary free WhatsApp Business app most small clinics run on their own phone.
Meta's documentation lists five concrete requirements for an OBA, and nothing else:
Official Business Account: Meta's own five requirements
The business complies with WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy.
The business phone number has been registered on the WhatsApp Business Platform for at least 30 days.
The business has completed Meta's Business Portfolio verification process.
The business phone number has two-step verification turned on.
The business phone number's display name has been approved.
Rejected applications have to wait 30 days before reapplying, per the same documentation. Because the OBA sits on the Business Platform, a clinic first has to move off the free WhatsApp Business app before this free badge is even possible, which is a bigger step than most "how to get verified" checklists mention. Read what actually changes between the app and the Platform before deciding that is worth doing just for a badge.
What is Meta Verified for Business on WhatsApp, and what does it cost in India?
Meta Verified for Business is the paid route, and it is the one a clinic on the ordinary free WhatsApp Business app can actually use. Meta first announced it would bring Meta Verified to WhatsApp in a September 2023 newsroom post (opens in a new tab), describing "a verified badge confirming your business is validated and authentic," impersonation monitoring and dedicated support.
Meta announces it will bring Meta Verified to businesses on WhatsApp
WhatsApp starts the rollout in four countries: Brazil, India, Indonesia and Colombia
Meta Verified reaches all eligible small businesses in India on the WhatsApp Business app, priced at ₹639 a month
Meta launches a new subscription, Meta One, rolling out gradually worldwide; its entry business tier in India, Essential, is ₹639 a month and includes a verified badge
As of this launch, there is a small mismatch worth knowing about. WhatsApp's own Help Center (opens in a new tab), checked on 17 September 2026, still names the four Meta Verified tiers Business Standard, Business Plus, Business Premium and Business Max. Coverage of the Meta One launch two days earlier calls the equivalent entry tier "Essential," priced the same at ₹639 a month with the same core WhatsApp features. The price and the features line up across both; only the tier name does not, which suggests WhatsApp's Help Center simply had not caught up with the new branding at the time of checking.
| Official Business Account | Meta Verified for Business | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | From ₹639 a month in India |

Does paying for Meta Verified guarantee my clinic gets the badge?
No, and this is the part most "how to get verified on WhatsApp" pages skip. Per WhatsApp's Help Center (opens in a new tab), subscribing to Meta Verified or Meta One does not by itself guarantee verification. One of three things happens next: Meta verifies the account automatically from its existing activity, Meta asks for business documents to review by hand, or the subscription stays active without the badge being granted.
What do patients actually see when a number is verified?
A small checkmark next to the clinic's name, visible on the chat screen, the calls tab, an incoming call, and any shared business card or context card. That is the entire visible difference to a patient. It does not change the clinic's name, number, working hours or any message the clinic sends, and it does not add a review score or a "trusted" label of any kind.
Does a small clinic actually need this badge?
Most clinics run their WhatsApp on the free Business app, so the free Official Business Account is not on the table without first moving to the paid Business Platform, a bigger decision than a checkmark alone usually justifies. That leaves the ₹639-a-month Meta Verified subscription as the only realistic path, and even that does not guarantee the badge will be granted.
The badge exists to stop someone impersonating the clinic's number, which matters more for a business that patients search for and message cold, without ever saving the number first. A clinic whose patients already save its number after a visit, and who mainly reply rather than run public WhatsApp ads or a widely-shared Channel, gets less of that specific protection from the badge day to day. Whether the extra support and device limits in the paid plan are worth ₹639 a month on their own is a separate, smaller question each clinic can answer for itself, but it is not the same as buying trust or a medical endorsement, because the badge was never designed to give either.
What is worth doing either way: keeping the WhatsApp Business profile itself accurate, which patients read closely whether or not a checkmark sits next to the name. See setting up WhatsApp Business for a clinic for that part.

Common questions
Is the WhatsApp verified badge free?
It depends which one. The Official Business Account checkmark is free, but it is only open to businesses on the paid WhatsApp Business Platform (the API), not the ordinary free WhatsApp Business app. Meta Verified for Business, which does work on the free app, is a paid subscription starting at ₹639 a month in India. Checked 17 Sep 2026.
My clinic uses the free WhatsApp Business app. Can we get the free checkmark?
No. Meta's own documentation states an Official Business Account must be registered on the WhatsApp Business Platform for at least 30 days, which the free WhatsApp Business app is not. A clinic on the free app that wants any badge has to use the paid Meta Verified subscription instead.
What does Meta Verified for Business on WhatsApp cost in India?
The entry plan has been priced at ₹639 a month since it reached all eligible small businesses in India in September 2024. On 15 September 2026 Meta launched a wider subscription called Meta One, rolling out gradually, whose entry business tier, Essential, is also ₹639 a month in India and includes a verified badge on the WhatsApp Business app. Check the current plan names in the app before you subscribe.
If I subscribe to Meta Verified, will my clinic definitely get the badge?
No. WhatsApp's own Help Center states that subscribing does not guarantee verification. After paying, Meta either verifies the account automatically from existing activity, asks for documents to review by hand, or leaves the subscription active without granting the badge. The paid features stay either way, but the checkmark is not guaranteed.
Does a verified badge mean WhatsApp has checked a clinic's medical credentials?
No. Both badges confirm that Meta believes the account belongs to the real, authentic business it claims to be, mainly to stop impersonation. Neither one reviews a doctor's registration, qualifications or the treatments a clinic offers.
Do I need to hire an agency to apply for a WhatsApp verified badge?
No. Both applications happen inside WhatsApp Manager (for an Official Business Account) or the WhatsApp Business app's own settings (for Meta Verified), directly with Meta. An agency cannot get you approved any faster than Meta's own review does.
