What should a clinic post on its Google Business Profile?

Short answer

A Google Business Profile post is a short update, offer or event on your clinic's Maps and Search listing. Google sets no character limit and no fixed posting frequency, but does specify photo size (JPG or PNG, 720x720px recommended) and bans a phone number in the text. Safe topics: timing changes, a new doctor, services explained plainly.

Key takeaways

  • A post is one of three types: Update, Offer or Event, each with its own required fields and action button.
  • Google has never published a character limit for post text; the widely repeated "1,500 characters" figure is not on Google's own help page or its developer API reference.
  • Google's documented photo spec (JPG or PNG, 720x720px recommended, 250x250px minimum, 10 KB to 5 MB) applies to post images, and posts older than 6 months are archived unless a date range is set.
  • Google bans a phone number inside post text; NMC 2002 regulation 6.1 bans superlative and outcome claims, so 'best clinic' wording and success stories stay out even where Google would allow them.

Most "what to post" lists for clinics repeat the same unsourced numbers: a 1,500-character limit, an exact image size, "post 2 to 3 times a week". Google has not published any of those three. Here is what its own pages actually say, and 12 sample post ideas that stay inside NMC and ASCI rules for Indian doctors.

What is a Google Business Profile post?

A post is a short item you add to your clinic's Business Profile, separate from your main details, photos and reviews. It shows to anyone who finds your listing on Google Maps or Search, and it can carry text, one photo or video, and one action button, using the steps on Google's own posts help page (opens in a new tab).

What types of posts can a clinic create?

Google gives three post types. Each one asks for different fields and shows a different button.

What length and image size does a post need?

Checked directly on Google's consumer help page and its developer API reference on 17 Sep 2026: neither one states a character limit for post text. The photo specification below is the one Google does publish, applied to all Business Profile images, posts included.

Post text lengthNo character limit published, on the help page or the developer API reference
Photo format and sizeJPG or PNG, between 10 KB and 5 MB
Photo resolution720 by 720 pixels recommended, 250 by 250 pixels minimum

  1. Step 1: Open your Business Profile

From Google Search or Maps, or business.google.com.
  2. Step 2: Select Posts, then Add post

  3. Step 3: Choose Update, Offer or Event

Add text, one photo, and a button if it fits.
  4. Step 4: Post it

Or set a date range if it should stop showing on a specific day.

How often should a clinic post?

Google has not published a required or recommended posting frequency, on the pages checked for this article. Advice ranging from once a month to 2 to 3 times a week is common online, but none of it traces back to a Google source. What Google does state is that posts are archived after 6 months unless a date range is set, which matters more for a clinic: a post about old timings or a doctor who has left should be removed or replaced as soon as it stops being true, not left to sit until it expires on its own.

What can a clinic post about?

NMC 2002 regulation 6.1 stops a doctor from advertising skill, achievements or outcomes, but it specifically allows a formal, factual announcement of a change in practice, such as an address or timing change, per the regulation text (opens in a new tab). That is a useful line for posts: state what changed, plainly, without a claim attached to it.

  • Practice changes. Clinic timings, a holiday closure, a new doctor joining, a doctor going on leave, an address or branch change.
  • Services, explained plainly. What a service is and who it is for, with no claim about results or comparison to another clinic.
  • Health-awareness days. What the day marks and when to see a doctor, general information only, no outcome or success-rate claim attached to your clinic.
  • Camps and drives. A screening day, vaccination drive or awareness camp, as an Event post with the actual date and time.

What should a clinic never put in a post?

Two of these show up often in generic "post idea" lists written for clinics outside India: typing a phone number into the post text, and sharing a patient testimonial video. The first breaks Google's own posts policy. The second is the kind of self-advertisement NMC regulation 6.1 does not allow.

Common questions

What is a Google Business Profile post?

A short update, offer or event that appears on your clinic's Business Profile on Google Maps and Search, separate from your reviews, photos and main details. It can carry text, one photo or video, and one action button.

How long can a Google Business Profile post be?

Google does not publish a character limit on its post help page or its developer API reference, checked 17 Sep 2026. Figures like "1,500 characters" that circulate online are not Google's own stated number. Keep it short enough to read at a glance either way.

What image size should a clinic use for a post?

Google's documented photo spec, which it applies to all Business Profile images including posts, is JPG or PNG, 10 KB to 5 MB, with 720 by 720 pixels recommended and 250 by 250 pixels the minimum. Checked 17 Sep 2026.

How often should a clinic post on Google Business Profile?

Google has not published a required or recommended frequency. Posts older than 6 months are archived unless a date range is set, so a post that stops being true (old timings, a doctor who has left) is worth removing sooner than that, not left to expire on its own.

Can a clinic put its phone number in a post?

No. Google's posts content policy does not allow a phone number inside post text, to avoid abuse. Use the Call button on the post instead, which dials the verified number already on your profile.

Can a clinic post about a health awareness day?

Yes, as general awareness only: what the day marks and when to see a doctor, with no claims about outcomes, no "best" or "No.1" wording and no patient photos, per NMC 2002 regulation 6.1 and the ASCI code.
